What weight should your weighted blanket be?

The 10% rule, special cases and our advice to find your blanket weight.

Three weighted blankets of different weights laid on a bench

Weight is the most important factor when choosing a weighted blanket. Too light, and it feels like an ordinary throw; too heavy, and it quickly becomes uncomfortable. This guide gives you a simple method, a complete weight chart and answers for special cases: children, couples, choosing between two weights and first-time use.

The basic rule: around 10% of your body weight

The most widely used guideline is this: choose a weighted blanket that weighs around 10% of your body weight. So a person weighing 70 kg would go for 7 kg (about 15 lb), and a person weighing 60 kg would go for 6 kg. It is not an exact formula, but a reliable starting point that you then adjust to how it feels.

The aim is a gentle, enveloping pressure spread across the whole body, without restricting your movements. This is known as deep pressure stimulation: a sensation many people look for at bedtime, not a guaranteed result. Experiences vary from person to person.

Torn between two weights?

If your body weight sits on the boundary between two ranges, or if you are unsure, choose the lighter weight. A slightly light blanket is still pleasant and gets used every night; a blanket that is too heavy often ends up in a corner of the bedroom. For example, at 68 kg, a 6 kg blanket is a safer first choice than a 7 kg one.

Your ideal weight is not available in the model you want

Each model has its own range of weights: the Cotton, Summer and Soft come in 5, 7, 9 and 11 kg (plus 3 kg for the Cotton in 135 × 200 cm), while the Winter and Premium come in 6, 8, 10 and 12 kg. If your exact weight is not offered in the model you like, go for the next weight down. Example: a person weighing 75 kg who wants the Winter weighted blanket chooses 6 kg rather than 8 kg.

How it feels: first blanket and pressure preference

How it feels matters as much as the calculation. Three situations call for a lighter weight:

  • It is your first weighted blanket: your body needs a few nights to get used to this new sensation. Starting light makes the experience more enjoyable.
  • You are sensitive to pressure or do not like feeling held in place: stay below 10%.
  • You mainly use it on the sofa, sitting up: a lighter weight is easier to handle.

On the other hand, if you are already familiar with weighted blankets and enjoy a firm pressure, 10% remains the sensible limit: we do not recommend going above it.

In-between weights: the weighted duvet and the Linen model

Two models offer weights that fall between our whole-kilo weights:

  • The weighted duvet comes in 2.5 / 4.5 / 6.5 / 8.5 and 10.5 kg. The 2.5 kg version offers a very light feel, suited to an adult trying weighted bedding for the first time.
  • The Linen weighted blanket weighs 5.5 kg (one weight only). It suits people around 55 kg, or anyone who likes a light pressure.

These in-between weights are useful if you sit right between two ranges and prefer a compromise rather than a noticeably lighter weight.

Weighted blankets for kids: strict rules

For children, caution comes first. Our rules have no exceptions:

  • Never under 3 years old, never under 15 kg, never for a baby.
  • Between 15 and 29 kg, 10% of body weight is less than our lightest weight (3 kg): no weighted blanket without the advice of a healthcare professional.
  • From 30 kg, the 3 kg blanket becomes possible, then the 4 kg from 40 kg.
  • The child must be able to remove the blanket on their own, without help.
  • An adult checks the chosen weight and never covers the child’s face.

The Kids weighted blanket comes in 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 kg, in 90 × 120, 100 × 150 and 110 × 170 cm. To learn more, read our article Weighted blankets for kids: age, weight and safety.

For two: one weight per person

A weighted blanket is chosen for a person, never for a bed. If you want to sleep under the same blanket, the two-person weighted blanket (270 × 200 cm) brings together two independent 135 × 200 cm inserts joined by straps. The weight is given per insert: each should match around 10% of the body weight of the person sleeping under it (4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 kg). If your weights differ a lot, the rule stays the same: if in doubt, go by the lighter person. See also our two-person weighted blankets selection.

  2. Between two weights, first time or sensitive to pressure: choose the lighter one.
  3. Weight not available in the model you want: take the next weight down.
  4. For a child: never under 3 years old or under 15 kg, and always able to get out from under it alone.
