Weighted blanket care: the model-by-model guide

Cover, weighted inner blanket, drying and storage: the right habits for a long life.

A well-cared-for weighted blanket keeps its softness and an even spread of weight for a long time. The rules differ depending on the construction: removable cover, all-in-one model or duvet. Here are the general guidelines, followed by the details for each model. If in doubt, the label sewn onto your blanket always takes precedence.

General guidelines

  • Read the label before the first wash.
  • Wash the cover more often than the insert: on models with a cover, the cover is what touches your skin.
  • Moderate temperature: 30 °C maximum for inserts and all-in-one models, 40 °C maximum for covers.
  • Delicate cycle and low spin: a fast spin puts strain on the stitching of the pockets.
  • Air dry, ideally flat, spreading the weight evenly. Several models explicitly rule out the tumble dryer: check the section for your model.
  • Mild detergent, in moderate amounts, with no bleach.

Can your machine wash a heavy insert?

This is the first thing to check. Once wet, a weighted insert is much heavier than when dry. Before you start the wash, check your washing machine’s capacity in its manual. If it is not enough for your blanket’s weight, use a larger-capacity machine, for example at a laundromat. This mainly applies to the weighted duvet and the inserts of the Two-person model, as well as the heaviest weights.

Travel weighted blanket

Two-sided velvet, no cover: 30 °C, delicate cycle, following the label. Air dry.

Weighted duvet

Remove the duvet cover. Duvet: 30 °C, delicate cycle, low spin. Check your machine’s capacity. Air dry. No tumble dryer, do not iron.

Covers and accessories

How often should you wash a weighted blanket?

For models with a cover, wash the cover regularly, just like a duvet cover, and the insert only when needed. For all-in-one models, a few washes a year are usually enough if you air the blanket regularly. Between washes, give it a gentle shake and let it breathe near an open window.

Stains, odors and storage

For a small stain, there is no need to wash the whole blanket: dab the area with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, without rubbing, then let it air dry. To freshen up an all-in-one blanket between washes, air it out for a day in the shade. If you put your blanket away for a season, make sure it is completely dry, fold it loosely and store it somewhere dry, preferably flat, rather than at the top of a pile.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Washing an insert at a high temperature or with a fast spin.
  • Using the tumble dryer on a model that rules it out.
  • Hanging a wet blanket by one corner: the weight concentrates and pulls on the seams. Dry it flat.
  • Overloading a machine that is too small.
