How to wash a weighted blanket: the complete guide, model by model
How to wash a weighted blanket without damaging it: steps, machine capacity, cover at 40 °C, insert at 30 °C, drying flat and instructions for each model.

A weighted blanket can be washed, but not quite like a sheet or a regular duvet. Its weight, its glass microbeads spread across stitched pockets and its seams call for a few precautions. The good news: with the right settings, washing is simple, and your blanket keeps its shape and even weight distribution for a long time. This guide explains how to wash a weighted blanket step by step, how to check your machine’s capacity, how to dry it, and which instructions to follow for each Tyngda model.
Is your weighted blanket washable? Cover, insert or all-in-one
Before starting a wash, identify the type of blanket you have. All our weighted blankets are washable, but the method depends on how they are made.
- Models with a removable cover (Cotton, Winter, Premium, Kids, Two-person): the blanket consists of a weighted insert and a cover. The cover can be washed often, at 40 °C. The insert is washed less often, at 30 °C on a delicate cycle.
- All-in-one models (Summer, Sensory, Soft, Linen, Travel): there is no cover, and the whole blanket is washed at 30 °C maximum.
- Weighted duvet: sold without a cover, it is washed at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, with a low spin.
In every case, the label sewn onto your blanket takes precedence. Read it before the first wash.
How to wash a weighted blanket in the machine, step by step
- Check the label and note the maximum temperature shown.
- Remove the cover if your model has one: undo the ties or open the zip. Close the zip before washing so it does not snag the fabric.
- Check your washing machine’s capacity (see the next section).
- Spot-clean any stains before washing if needed.
- Choose the right cycle: 40 °C for a cover, 30 °C on a delicate cycle for an insert or an all-in-one blanket.
- Use a mild detergent, in moderate amounts. Avoid bleach and harsh products. Fabric softener is not necessary.
- Set a low spin, or no spin at all for the Premium insert if your machine allows it.
- Leave it to dry flat in the open air, without a tumble dryer.
What machine capacity do you need for your blanket’s weight?
This is the point most often overlooked. A weighted blanket already weighs several kilos when dry, and it becomes much heavier once soaked with water. The capacity stated by your washing machine’s manufacturer refers to dry laundry: your blanket’s weight should stay below that capacity, with a comfortable margin, so the drum turns properly and the machine is not put under strain.
- Cover only: it is light, and a standard household machine is enough.
- Lighter weights (3 to 5 kg, Kids, Travel and Linen blankets): check your machine’s capacity and make sure it is clearly above the weight of the blanket.
- Heavier weights (8 to 12 kg): a large-capacity machine is often needed. If yours is too small, do not force it.
- Two-person weighted blanket: separate the two 135 × 200 cm inserts by undoing the straps, and wash them one after the other. The covers are washed at 40 °C.
What if the blanket is too heavy for your machine?
There are two simple solutions. The first: wash only the cover, which protects the insert day to day, and wash the insert less often. The second: go to a laundromat, where you will find large-capacity machines. Choose a delicate 30 °C cycle with a low spin, then bring the blanket home to dry it flat. Do not use the laundromat’s dryers.
Drying: flat and in the open air, never in the tumble dryer
Drying matters as much as washing. A wet weighted blanket is heavy: hung by one edge on a line, it pulls on the seams, and the microbeads can settle on one side.
- Lay it flat, on a wide drying rack or on two racks side by side.
- Dry it in the open air, in a well-ventilated room or outdoors, out of direct sunlight to protect the colors.
- No tumble dryer: the heat and repeated tumbling damage the seams and fabrics.
- Turn it over from time to time and shake it gently to spread the microbeads evenly.
- Wait until it is completely dry, right through the insert, before putting the cover back on or storing it.
Allow more time than for a regular duvet, especially for heavier weights. This is one of the reasons a removable cover is so practical: it washes and dries quickly, while the insert stays in use.

Weighted blanket covers: when should you use one?
A cover protects the insert from sweat, dust and small everyday stains. It is the part you wash regularly, which means fewer washes for the insert, which is heavier and takes longer to dry.
Our weighted blanket cover (from $54.90) comes in 90 × 120, 100 × 150, 110 × 170, 135 × 200 and 150 × 220 cm. It attaches with ties on the Cotton, Winter and Kids models and on the weighted duvet, or with a zip on the Premium. Two versions are available: all-season velvet (gray, Poseidon blue, yellow, pink) and summer 100% cotton (gray, white, terracotta orange). It can be washed at 40 °C maximum.
Having a second cover is handy: while one is drying, the other is in use. It also lets you switch fabrics with the seasons. The all-in-one models (Sensory, Summer, Soft, Linen, Travel) are not compatible with the cover: they are washed directly.
How often should you wash a weighted blanket? And what about stains?
How often
There is no single rule: it all depends on how you use it, the season and whether it has a cover. In practice, wash the cover about as often as a duvet cover. The insert, protected by the cover, can be washed much less often, for example when the seasons change or if it gets stained. An all-in-one blanket, in direct contact with the skin, needs washing a little more often, especially in summer.
Stains
For a small stain, there is no need to wash the whole blanket. Act quickly: blot up the excess, then dab with a damp cloth, cold water and a little mild soap. Dab without rubbing so as not to spread the stain, rinse with a clean damp cloth and leave to dry flat. Avoid harsh stain removers, which can mark the fabric.
Frequently asked questions
Can you machine wash a weighted blanket?
Yes. Covers are washed at 40 °C, and inserts and all-in-one models at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, with a low spin. Always check the label and your machine’s capacity.
Can you put a weighted blanket in the tumble dryer?
No. Dry it flat, in the open air, turning it over from time to time. The tumble dryer damages the seams and fabrics.
What if my blanket is too heavy for my machine?
Wash only the cover and wash the insert less often, or use a large-capacity machine at a laundromat on a delicate 30 °C cycle, then dry it flat at home.
Can glass microbeads go through the wash?
Yes, as long as you stick to the temperature shown and a low spin. Shake the blanket gently while it dries to spread the weight evenly.
Do you need a cover for a weighted blanket?
For models with an insert, a cover makes care much easier: it can be washed often and dries quickly. All-in-one models do not need one.
