Weighted blanket in summer: what to do if it feels too hot
Too hot under your weighted blanket in summer? Why it happens, which fabrics to choose (cotton, linen), all-in-one or cover, and how to keep using it all year.

You love the feeling of a weighted blanket, but as soon as the nights warm up, you push it off after a few minutes? It is one of the most common comments we hear, and there is a simple explanation. The good news: you do not have to put your weighted blanket away for the summer. By choosing a breathable fabric, the right construction and a few good habits, you can keep your bedtime ritual all year round. Here is how, with complete honesty about what a blanket can do, and what it cannot.
Why do you get hot under a weighted blanket?
A weighted blanket is not a heater, but several factors add up to create that feeling of warmth.
- The weight presses the fabric against your body. A regular blanket leaves a layer of air between it and you. A weighted blanket follows your contours: less air circulates and more body heat stays trapped.
- The cover fabric makes a big difference. Velvet and plush are soft and enveloping, ideal in winter, but they hold in heat. Cotton and linen let air through more easily.
- The padding. A winter model with thick padding insulates more than a thin blanket.
- Layering. Many people put their weighted blanket on top of a duvet. In summer, this double layer quickly becomes too warm.
- The bedroom itself. A poorly ventilated room, an attic bedroom or a heated room affects your comfort far more than the blanket alone.
Cooling weighted blankets: what you need to know
You will sometimes see the term “cooling weighted blanket”. Let us be clear: no blanket produces cold. A summer weighted blanket does not lower your body temperature or the temperature of the room. What it can do, however, is hold in less heat: a natural, breathable fabric, a thin construction and no unnecessary layers let you keep the feeling of pressure without the “sauna” effect.
That is why we prefer to talk about a breathable weighted blanket rather than a cooling one. The term is less eye-catching, but it matches what you will actually feel.
Which fabrics should you choose for summer?
Cotton
Cotton is the safe bet: soft, breathable, pleasant against the skin and easy to wash. A 100% cotton blanket or cover suits most people who get hot at night, in summer as well as in spring and autumn.
Linen
Linen is the summer fabric par excellence. Its slightly dry texture and excellent breathability make it a popular choice for warm nights. It softens with every wash and has a natural, unfussy feel.
What is best kept for winter
Velvet, plush and thick padding provide a cocooning effect that is much sought after when it is cold. In summer, it is better to put them away or change the cover.
All-in-one or removable cover: which should you choose?
There are two main ways to make a weighted blanket, and each has its advantages in summer.
- The all-in-one model has no cover: the outer fabric holds the glass microbeads directly. There is only one layer of fabric, which makes it the lightest and most breathable option. The whole blanket goes in the washing machine.
- The removable cover model consists of a weighted insert and a cover attached with ties or a zip. Its big advantage: you simply change the cover with the season, velvet in winter, cotton in summer.
If you already own a Cotton, Winter or Kids weighted blanket, or a weighted duvet, our weighted blanket cover in the summer 100% cotton version (gray, white or terracotta orange) lets you lighten it without buying a new blanket. It comes in 90 × 120, 100 × 150, 110 × 170, 135 × 200 and 150 × 220 cm, with ties, or a zip for the Premium. It is not compatible with the all-in-one models (Sensory, Summer, Soft, Linen, Travel), which do not need a cover.
Our weighted blankets for summer

Summer weighted blanket
Our Summer weighted blanket is an all-in-one model in two-sided cotton, with no cover, and glass microbeads spread across stitched pockets. It is designed for summer, the in-between seasons and heated bedrooms. It comes in 5, 7, 9 and 11 kg, in 135 × 200 cm (from $139.90) and 150 × 220 cm (from $159.90), in gray, white or yellow.
Linen weighted blanket
The Linen weighted blanket is an all-in-one in 100% linen on both sides, with no cover, designed for spring, summer and warm nights. It comes in a single weight of 5.5 kg, suited to people of around 55 kg or those who like a light pressure, and in a single size of 120 × 190 cm ($219.90), in natural linen or powder pink.
Cotton weighted blanket
The Cotton weighted blanket combines a weighted insert with a removable two-sided 100% cotton cover. Breathable, it can be used all year round. It comes in 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 kg, in 135 × 200 cm (from $149.90) and 150 × 220 cm (from $179.90).
Sensory weighted blanket
The Sensory weighted blanket is an all-in-one in cotton, with no cover and no zip. It can be used on its own or with a duvet, which makes it easy to adapt: on its own in summer, with the duvet in winter. It comes in 4 to 12 kg, in 135 × 200 cm (from $159.90) and 150 × 220 cm (from $179.90).
Practical tips for keeping your weighted blanket in summer
- Take off the duvet. In summer, the weighted blanket can replace the duvet. A simple sheet underneath is often enough.
- Choose a slightly lighter weight. The rule is still around 10% of your body weight. If you are torn between two weights, go for the lighter one: you still feel the pressure, and it feels less warm.
- Place it over your legs only. On the hottest nights, covering just your legs and lower body lets you keep the feeling of weight while leaving your upper body uncovered.
- Use it while you fall asleep. Nothing says you have to keep it on all night. Many people use it to unwind at bedtime, then push it off when they get too warm.
- Air the bedroom. Open the windows in the evening and morning, and close the shutters or curtains during the day.
- Think about your pillow. Our cooling pillow has a breathable cotton pillowcase that is pleasant in summer (gray or Poseidon blue, from $22.90). Like the blanket, it does not produce cold, but it holds in less heat than a thick pillowcase.
- Wash the blanket more often. We sweat more in summer. Follow the instructions for each model: 30 °C on a delicate cycle for the Summer and Sensory, cover at 40 °C for the Cotton.
Comfort product, not a medical device. If in doubt, or for a child, ask a healthcare professional for advice.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use a weighted blanket in summer?
Yes. With a breathable fabric such as cotton or linen, no duvet on top and a suitable weight, many people keep their weighted blanket all year round. Experiences vary depending on the person and the bedroom.
Is there a weighted blanket that cools you down?
No, no blanket produces cold. A summer weighted blanket simply holds in less heat thanks to a breathable fabric and a thinner construction.
Should you choose a lighter weight in summer?
The starting point is still around 10% of your body weight. If you are torn between two weights, go for the lighter one. If the weight is not right, we will arrange an exchange.
Linen or cotton: which weighted blanket for summer?
Both are breathable. Linen is particularly suited to warm nights and to people who like a light pressure (5.5 kg). Cotton offers more choice of weights and sizes.
Can I turn my winter blanket into a summer blanket?
If it has a removable cover with ties or a zip, yes: replace the velvet cover with a summer 100% cotton cover in the same size. The thick padding of the Winter model will still be warmer than a summer model, though.
