Choosing your weighted blanket
What is a weighted blanket?
It is a blanket that weighs much more than an ordinary throw, with its weight spread across small pockets filled with glass microbeads (or stainless steel beads for our Premium). It provides a gentle, enveloping pressure over the whole body. It is also known as a heavy blanket, a weighted throw or a gravity blanket.
What weight should my weighted blanket be?
The usual guideline is around 10% of your body weight: 7 kg for a person weighing 70 kg, for example. If you are torn between two weights, if it is your first blanket or if you are sensitive to pressure, choose the lighter one. Our weight guide covers each range from 3 to 12 kg.
What size should I choose?
A weighted blanket covers the body, not the bed: it should not hang over the sides. For an adult, 135 × 200 cm is the standard size, and 150 × 220 cm suits people taller than about 1.80 m. For two people, there is the 270 × 200 cm. See our size guide.
I get hot quickly at night: which model should I choose?
Go for a breathable fabric. The Summer weighted blanket, in two-sided cotton, suits summer and heated bedrooms; the Linen model, in 100% linen, is designed for warm nights. The Cotton model is comfortable all year round. Our weighted blanket comparison shows all eleven models side by side.
Weighted duvet or weighted blanket: what is the difference?
The weighted duvet keeps the loft and insulating layer of a duvet: it replaces your duvet in autumn and winter and slips into a duvet cover of the same size. The weighted blanket is thinner and is used on its own, under or over a duvet. Our article Weighted duvet or weighted blanket will help you decide.
Can two people share a weighted blanket?
A weighted blanket is chosen for one person, because the weight depends on each individual. To sleep under the same blanket, our 270 × 200 cm Two-person model brings together two independent 135 × 200 cm inserts, each weighted at around 10% of the body weight of the person sleeping under it. You can also opt for two individual blankets.
Use and safety
How does a weighted blanket work?
The weight spread over the body creates a gentle, even pressure, often compared to a hug: this is the principle of deep pressure stimulation. Many people look for it as part of a soothing bedtime routine, when falling asleep or during stressful moments. Experiences vary from person to person.
How many nights does it take to get used to a weighted blanket?
Allow a few nights. At first, use it for a while before sleeping, on the sofa or in bed, then gradually extend the time. If the sensation still feels too strong after several nights, a lighter weight will suit you better: that is exactly what our weight exchange is for, as part of our 30-night trial.
Can I sleep with it all night?
Yes, for a healthy adult who has chosen the right weight and can remove it alone at any time. Never cover your face with the blanket. If you get hot, choose a breathable model or place it over just part of your body. You remain free to push it off during the night.
Who should not use a weighted blanket without professional advice?
Ask a healthcare professional for advice before use if you are pregnant or have breathing, circulation or mobility problems. Never use it for a child under 3 years old or under 15 kg. Anyone using it must be able to remove it on their own. More details in our article on precautions.
Is a weighted blanket a medical device?
No. Our weighted blankets are comfort products, not medical devices. They do not replace professional care or advice. Many people choose them for their cocooning feel, including people with sensory needs, ADHD or autism, but experiences vary. If in doubt, ask a healthcare professional for advice.
Can I use it during the day, on the sofa?
Absolutely. Many people use it to read, watch a film or take a break. Our Travel weighted blanket, in 110 × 170 cm and 5 kg, is designed for those moments and for trips. For the office, our weighted accessories range also includes a weighted lap pad and a weighted neck wrap.
Children
From what age can a child use a weighted blanket?
Never under 3 years old, never under 15 kg, and never for a baby. Between 15 and 29 kg, 10% of the child’s weight is less than our lightest weight of 3 kg: we therefore advise against any weighted blanket without the advice of a healthcare professional. The 3 kg blanket becomes possible from 30 kg.
What weight for a child?
The same rule applies: around 10% of body weight, rounding down. A child weighing 30 to 39 kg can use 3 kg, and 40 to 49 kg can use 4 kg. An adult always checks the chosen weight. Our Kids weighted blanket comes in 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 kg.
What size for a child?
The 90 × 120 cm fits a toddler bed and covers a child up to about 120 cm tall. The 100 × 150 cm suits children up to about 145 cm, and the 110 × 170 cm older children and teenagers. The size is chosen according to the child’s build, the weight according to their body weight.
What safety rules should be followed for a child?
The child must be able to remove the blanket on their own, without help. An adult checks the weight, never covers the child’s face and keeps a close eye during the first uses. For a child, ask a healthcare professional for advice. Our article Weighted blankets for kids: age, weight and safety covers these points in detail.
Care
Can a weighted blanket be machine washed?
Yes. On models with a cover, the cover is washed at 40 °C and the insert at 30 °C on a delicate cycle with a low spin. All-in-one models can be machine washed at 30 °C maximum. Check your washing machine’s capacity for heavy inserts. Details for each model are on our care page.
Can I use a tumble dryer?
We recommend air drying for all our blankets, ideally flat so the weight stays evenly spread. Several models explicitly rule out the tumble dryer, including the Cotton, Winter, Summer, Premium and the weighted duvet. Also avoid hanging a wet blanket by one corner, which pulls on the seams.
Can I buy an extra cover?
Yes, our weighted blanket cover comes in an all-season velvet version or a summer cotton version, with loop ties, or a zip for the Premium. It can be washed at 40 °C maximum. It is not compatible with the all-in-one models: Sensory, Summer, Soft, Linen and Travel.
What are your blankets filled with?
All our blankets are weighted with glass microbeads spread across stitched pockets, except the Premium, whose insert contains secured stainless steel beads that do not shift. Our blankets and covers are made in Europe, with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified fabrics.
