Weighted duvet or weighted blanket: what are the differences?

Weighted duvet, blanket with a cover or all-in-one: warmth, weight, season and use compared, and why we do not recommend a 220 × 240 cm weighted duvet.

White weighted duvet and gray weighted blanket side by side on a bed

Weighted duvet or weighted blanket: the two terms often overlap in searches, yet they do not refer to quite the same product. Both provide a gentle, enveloping pressure, but one adds the warmth of a duvet, while the other is used on its own or on top of your usual bedding. In this guide, we compare our weighted duvet, our weighted blankets with a cover and our all-in-one models, and explain why a 220 × 240 cm weighted duvet, which would cover the whole bed, is not a good idea.

Weighted duvet, weighted blanket: what are we talking about?

Weighted duvet, weighted comforter, weighted blanket, heavy blanket: all these products share the same principle. A filling of microbeads is spread across stitched pockets, so the weight rests evenly on the body. The difference lies mainly in what surrounds that filling.

The weighted duvet: warmth and weight combined

Our weighted duvet looks like a classic white quilted duvet. Its cotton shell holds glass microbeads spread across pockets, combined with an insulating layer that gives it the loft of a duvet. It is designed to replace your duvet during autumn and winter.

It is sold without a cover: you put it in a cover of the same size with ties, just like an ordinary duvet. It comes in 135 × 200 cm and 150 × 220 cm, and offers in-between weights: 2.5 / 4.5 / 6.5 / 8.5 / 10.5 kg. The 2.5 kg version offers a very light feel, useful for an adult trying weighted bedding for the first time.

The weighted blanket with a cover

Our Cotton, Winter, Premium and Kids models consist of a weighted insert and a removable cover. The insert provides the weight, the cover provides the feel: breathable cotton, warmer velvet, or an interchangeable cover for each season on the Premium. These blankets can be used on their own or together with your duvet.

The all-in-one model

Our Summer, Sensory, Soft, Linen and Travel models have no cover: the filling is stitched directly into the outer fabric. No zip, no ties, no cover slipping around. It is the simplest option, often the coolest, and it sits easily on top of or under a duvet.

On its own or with a duvet: how should you use it?

The question of layering comes up often. Here are our guidelines:

  • The weighted duvet is used on its own, instead of your duvet. Adding a duvet on top would quickly make it too warm.
  • A weighted blanket with a cotton cover can be used on its own in spring and autumn, or under a light duvet when the nights get cooler.
  • An all-in-one model such as the Sensory can be used on its own, under or on top of a duvet, depending on the bedroom temperature.
  • In every case, keep one simple rule: you must be able to push everything off on your own, easily. Adding layers should never stop you from getting out of bed.

Which option for which season?

Weight says nothing about warmth: it is the fabric and the thickness that count.

  • In autumn and winter, the weighted duvet provides both weight and warmth, without piling on layers. Our Winter blanket, with its cotton and velvet cover, is another option for chilly nights. Find them in our winter weighted blanket collection.
  • In spring and summer, choose an all-in-one model in cotton or linen, which is more breathable, or a blanket with a 100% cotton cover.
  • All year round, a blanket with an interchangeable cover lets you switch from a velvet feel to a cotton feel without changing the insert.

220 × 240 cm weighted duvet: why we do not offer one

Many people look for a 220 × 240 cm weighted duvet, the usual duvet size for a double bed in Europe and close to a king-size comforter. It makes sense: you imagine replacing the couple’s duvet with a weighted version. We have nevertheless chosen not to offer this size, for several reasons.

  • A weighted blanket covers the body, not the bed. A 220 × 240 cm duvet hangs well over the sides. The overhanging weight then pulls the duvet toward the floor and makes everything slide off during the night.
  • Each person needs their own weight. The weight is calculated at around 10% of each person’s body weight. Two people of different builds cannot share a single weight that suits them both.
  • Each person must be able to remove it on their own. A very large, heavy duvet is harder to push off, especially if the other person is lying on it.

To sleep as a couple under a suitable weight, we offer two solutions:

  1. Our two-person weighted blanket in 270 × 200 cm: two independent 135 × 200 cm inserts joined by straps, which can be joined together or used separately. Each insert is weighted for the person sleeping under it (4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 kg). It comes with a large 270 × 200 cm velvet cover and two individual 135 × 200 cm covers.
  2. Two single weighted blankets or duvets, each with its own weight, fabric and size. On a 160 cm bed, two 135 × 200 cm blankets work well.

How to choose between a weighted duvet and a weighted blanket

  • You want a single piece that replaces your duvet in winter: choose the weighted duvet.
  • You want an in-between weight (2.5 / 4.5 / 6.5 / 8.5 / 10.5 kg): the weighted duvet is the only one that offers them, along with the Linen at 5.5 kg.
  • You want to use your weighted bedding all year round: a blanket with a cover or an all-in-one will be more versatile.
  • You often get hot at night: go for an all-in-one model in cotton or linen.
  • You share your bed: a two-person blanket with independent inserts, or two single models.

Whatever you choose, apply the rule of 10% of body weight and go for the lighter weight if in doubt. You have a 30-night trial, and we will arrange a weight exchange if the weight is not right for you.

Comfort product, not a medical device. If in doubt, or for a child, ask a healthcare professional for advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does a weighted duvet replace my duvet?

Yes, that is what it is for. Thanks to its insulating layer, it provides the warmth of a duvet as well as the weight. In autumn and winter, it is used on its own, with no extra duvet.

Are a weighted comforter and a weighted duvet the same thing?

Yes. Weighted comforter, weighted duvet and, more broadly, heavy blanket all refer to bedding filled with weight spread across pockets. The important difference is rather between a duvet (with an insulating layer) and a blanket (without one).

Which cover should I use for the weighted duvet?

It is sold without a cover. Use a cover of the same size (135 × 200 or 150 × 220 cm) with ties, which hold the duvet in place inside.

How do you wash a weighted duvet?

Machine wash at 30 °C on a delicate cycle with a low spin, then air dry. Do not tumble dry or iron. Check that your machine can handle the weight of the duvet before washing.

What weight of weighted duvet should I choose?

Around 10% of your body weight: 4.5 kg from 45 kg, 6.5 kg from 65 kg, 8.5 kg from 85 kg, 10.5 kg from 105 kg. The 2.5 kg version suits an adult who wants to try a very light feel.
