Weighted Blankets and Autism
For many autistic people and their families, choosing a weighted blanket is as much about predictability as weight: the same texture every time, no zip noise, nothing that slips. That is why the Sensory leads this selection. We offer it as a comfort product, without promising any effect; everyone experiences it differently. You will also find the kids’ version, the weighted vest and the weighted lap pad.
Why the Sensory comes first
The Sensory blanket is an all-in-one in cotton, with no cover and no zip:
- no zip noise when pulling it over you;
- no cover that slips or twists around the inner blanket;
- a single texture, cotton, and a single colour, grey;
- from 4 to 12 kg, in 135 × 200 cm ($159.90) or 150 × 220 cm ($179.90);
- on its own, under or over a duvet, all year round.
It is machine washable at 30 °C maximum on a delicate cycle and air dries: the blanket stays the same from one wash to the next.
Children: safety and adult supervision
- Never under 3 years old or under 15 kg, never for a baby.
- The child must be able to take the blanket off on their own; an adult checks the weight.
- About 10% of body weight, the lighter one when between two weights; between 15 and 29 kg, no weighted blanket without the advice of a healthcare professional.
The Kids blanket (3 to 7 kg) has a cover fastened with tie loops to limit slipping, in velvet or cotton. The kids’ weighted vest spreads 1.5 to 4 kg over the shoulders and torso, to be used with professional advice.
Getting used to the weight step by step
If the person has never tried weighted products, a small format can be a first step. The 1 kg weighted lap pad rests on the knees, without covering the body, and is easy to remove. For the blanket, choose the lightest weight that matches the range; a weight exchange is always possible, and the 30-night trial gives you time to decide.
Texture, warmth, care: what to check
- If cotton doesn’t suit, look at our sensory sensitivity selection, with linen and plush.
- If the person gets warm quickly, prefer an all-cotton model rather than velvet.
- The weighted neck wrap puts localised weight on the back of the neck, for a quiet moment during the day.
Safety precautions are gathered in our article risks and precautions.
Comfort product, not a medical device. If in doubt, or for a child, ask a healthcare professional for advice.
Frequently asked questions
Why recommend the Sensory for an autistic person?
Because it avoids several common sources of discomfort: no zip, so no zip noise, and no cover slipping around the inner blanket. It is made entirely of cotton, in a single colour. Everyone experiences it differently: the 30-night trial lets you check that it suits.
Is a weighted blanket suitable for an autistic child?
It can be, with the same rules as for any child: never under 3 years old or under 15 kg, about 10% of body weight, and the child must be able to take it off on their own. An adult checks the weight. If in doubt, ask a healthcare professional for advice.
How can someone get used to the weight gradually?
Start with a small format, such as the 1 kg weighted lap pad resting on the knees, which is easy to remove. For the blanket, choose the lightest weight in the recommended range. If the weight doesn’t suit, we arrange an exchange for another weight.
